Four Ways To Hack The Overwhelming Feeling of Motherhood....and everything else

  As women we wear so many hats, which often leaves us feeling overwhelmed. From having children, aging parents to take care of, in school part time, or running a business on the side- these are just a handful of things we have on our plate.  We’re expected to be superwoman and not just any super woman either, a pretty damn sexy one too! Half the time we run around and don’t get half the things done on our to-do list. We end up doing a lot of “things” but not really making any progress.  So here are a few tips to get your life in order just a bit more peacefully.
 
1.     What’s important to you? – Get a notebook and write the three most important things to you right now.  Then get specific about it, and then create some goals around it. One important item to me is my family. And more specifically to create a healthier and happier home for us. How can I make this goal a realization through our everyday lives? Well that brings us to number two.
 
2.     Creating a Routine! Whatever your goals are create ways to implement it into your life every day. Now continuing with our example of a happier and healthier home, I’ve made sure that my family has a healthy breakfast most mornings and that we enjoy it together. For us, dinner doesn’t always happen together but we’re fortunate enough to be able to start our day together.  Speaking of routine, kids thrive on it! When kids know what to expect, you can count on them to deliver. My son knows that after school, he has homework, dinner, reading time, bath time, prayers and bed by 8pm.  Does he try to fight this? Of course he does but like clockwork, he’s ready to sleep by his bedtime and we are able to maintain the peace.   This also maximizes your time so you don’t waste time!
 
3.     Say NO! Ladies you can’t do everything.  Routines won’t work if you tell your friends that it’s ok to have girls night twice a week but one of your goals is to spend more time with your husband! Or you take a conference call at 6pm, but you are supposed to be reading with your kids. To make matters worse, you believe that you can multitask! It’s actually very counter-productive. If it’s a priority then it simply comes first. Yes things will come up from time to time but you have to decide if something is becoming a hindrance.   When we begin to say yes to everything, that’s when we fall into the “overwhelming trap”.  We’re torn between satisfying ourselves and everyone else’s goals.
 
4.     Do you!  There is no way you can implement anything we just spoke about without taking care of you first. Without figuring out what’s best for you and how you want to do it.  Carve some time out everyday to just breathe. One routine that I’ve recently started and seems to be working is to wake up before anyone else. I give myself an hour before everyone wake up to spend time with God, plan out my day and honestly to just have some and peace and quiet!
 
I know I’m not the only one that always feels like she’s running around like a chicken with her head cut off all the time.  Being overwhelmed leads to stress, which leads to a multitude of symptoms and no amount of green smoothies will make it all better.
